Seems more like a doublet
I ordered one of these, and comparing it side by side to an Edmund Scientific 10x Hastings Triplet, I'd have to say:
1) The magnification is less... it's really more like 7.5x, I'd guess.
2) There's significantly more distortion around the edges; the quality seems closer to that of a doublet
It basically seems to be a case of "you get what you pay for" -- Edmund gets $40 for "the real deal," so for $16 this is really still a reasonable deal.

Only half the field is in focus at one time
When the center 1/2 of the field is in focus, the outer 1/2 is heavily distorted. Nowhere near a flat field of view.

Hastings Triplet?
If this is a Hastings triplet optic (which is likely) this is a very good price. Edmund Scientific sells the 10X HT for $39.35. I have their 7x HT and the optical quality is excellent. HT provides wide, flat, distortion-free view -- edge-to-edge sharp. http://www.scientificsonline.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_3038452
