`haven't built but maybe replace the 741 with a TL071? Same pinout, better quality/sound. JFET etc...

It needs a amp (for output)!!
This kit is fine for a beginner! Just be carefull with IC socket sodering. Passive components are spaced all right! You will need an output amp although!

Pre-amp
Not a kit for beginners. Know your op-amp math to recalculate the feedback resistor to set the gain lower. The gain is set for 100 and using the garbage 741 op-amp results in a terrible loss of bandwidth. A gain of 5 or less is better. Replace the volume control with a fixed 1K resistor and hang a 10K pot on the frontend to control the volume. This kit runs best at 15 volts or higher. A lower power source than that results in massive distortion and clipping.

Chip preamps...
..don't work very well INSIDE a transceiver!
If you were hoping to use this in your CB radio, forget it! The chip will sniff up every stray signal inside the radio and totally distort your audio - if you were to encase this unit in copper flashing, and heavily bypass the input and output it might be ok. The gain is waay too high using 12vdc - 3 vdc is a little better, but a preamp microphone will cost you about the same as this kit, so the savings will be your time.
