Excellent value, tick can be cured
Works great. The ticking can be cured with a 10 mfd capacitor on the wide trace below the mic connection to ground.

A Nomination for a great Gag gift...
The recorder on this item works quite well and is therefore worth the money. But the little doll on the pedestal? He's the ugliest thing I've ever seen;and looks to be a reject from a voodoo factory, therefore, I think he's a great gag gift, and those are hard to find for 2 bucks!

This is a pretty cool little item for the money. The ugly little monster on the top can be removed pretty easily by removing the bottom cover (4 screws) them remove the circuit board (4 screws) then remove the 2 screws holding Saw. I downloaded a crossing bell file from the internet, recorded it to the sound module and trigger the sound with a detection circuit and a relay wired across the play switch contact on the this module. The speaker has a pretty nice baffle and the entire unit can be slid out of the box. I used the speaker and baffle with a MRC sounder decoder and it sounded very good in the tender of a K-4. The speaker and baffle are worth the cost of the unit. It's quite a bit of technology for just $2.00

Great device for low cost
Ok, I now have 45 of these and no problems. (A long story why I needed 45). All work right out of the box. Been taking them apart and removing the figure from the top. Acetone and a q-tip remove the "SAW3" logo, just don't get it into the buttons, it will weld them into place (ask me how I know). Most batteries are in OK shape dispite their age, but some are definitely towards the low side. Distortion, incomplete playback and perhaps a slight ticking can be heard with low batteries. With new batteries playback is loud, relatively distortion free (voice) and without ticks. Now I only need to figure out what to do with 45 of these figures...

Not bad for 2 bucks!
This thing is a real hoot! I grabbed a few of them and most have the click/tick-tock sound, but it isn't that bad. Distortion and tone can be controlled somewhat by how close to the mike you get. As someone else already said, the batteries alone are worth the price. Gonna have fun with these!
